How Does One Become a Medical Transcriptionist?
There are many ways to become a medical transcriptionist. For example, many local colleges offer classes in medical terminology;
anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, typing, and some colleges offer dictation classes. In today’s fast paced information age there are
many accredited on-line and home study courses available (see Appendix F). The majority of the on-line courses can be taken from
any location and can take anywhere from a few months to a year to complete depending on how much time one is willing to invest to
complete the program. One may also desire to become certified through the AAMT, (American Association of Medical Transcription)
thus making employability easier (see Appendix C).
The researcher has learned form personal interviews with medical transcriptionists that if a candidate has any experience working in
the medical field this will help the candidate master the course work and become a proficient medical transcriber. Transcriptionists
interviewed expressed that it takes great patience, skills, perseverance and know-how to finish medical transcribing training and be
successful in the trade. Medical transcribing has been described to the researcher as a very solitary occupation, since most
transcribers work from home or in a quiet cubicle space in an office. The researcher’s interviews also showed that medical transcribing
could be a very satisfying career. The transcriptionists interviewed stated that the possibilities are endless and the salary can be
rewarding as well.
